- 8 ounces elbow macaroni
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- 2 1/2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 cup toasted bread crumbs

Preheat the oven to 350' F
Cook the macaroni in a 4-quart pot according to package directions, and keep an eye on it as you prepare the cheese sauce.
Melt butter in a 2-quart saucepan over medium-high heat. Add the flour and stir briefly. Add the milk to the butter and flour mixture and bring just to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium.
Add 2 cups of the Cheddar cheese (reserve 1/2 cup to sprinkle on top), and stir until the sauce becomes thick and creamy. Add the salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
When the macaroni is cooked, drain, then pour into a buttered 9 by 9-inch baking dish. Pour the hot cheese sauce over the macaroni, and sprinkle the bread crumbs and remaining 1/2 cup cheese over the mixture.
Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, until the top is golden and bubbling.
