Preparation

Step 1

Remove phyllo dough from freezer per box directions.

Mix all ingredients for syrup, except for honey, including lemon cut into small pieces. Boil at medium for about 25 minutes. Remove from heat, strain, add honey and cool.

Chop nuts very fine and add sugar, spices and 1/3 c butter.

Melt pound of butter.

Unroll phyllo on cutting board placing a damp clean cloth on top to keep it from drying out.

Brush 13 X 9 X 2 inch pan with melted butter. Fold sheet in half and brush with melted butter. Stack four sheets, making sure you brush with butter. Sprinkle 1/3 nut mixture and repeat two more times. Final layer should be dough. Cut into triangles about 2 inches wide. Pour any leftover butter over top.

Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Then reduce to 300 degrees for additional 30 minutes till lightly brown.

Pour cooled syrup over hot pastry.

When cooled, place each piece in individual paper muffin cups and arrange on plate.
