Five-Spice Tilapia

By

Chinese five-spice powder, soy sauce and brown sugar make a quick glaze for tilapia. You’ll need a skillet that is 12 inches or larger to accommodate the pound of tilapia fillets—if you don’t have one large enough, use 2 smaller skillets instead or cook them in two separate batches, using more oil as necessary.

Preparation

Step 1

Sprinkle both sides of tilapia fillets with five-spice powder. Combine soy sauce and brown sugar in a small bowl.

Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add the tilapia and cook until the outer edges are opaque, about 2 minutes. Reduce heat to medium, turn the fish over, stir the soy mixture, and pour into the pan. Bring the sauce to a boil and cook until the fish is cooked through and the sauce has thickened slightly, about 2 minutes more. Add scallions and remove from the heat. Serve the fish drizzled with the pan sauce.

This was very good and very easy to make. I cut everything in half, since I was only making it for my husband and myself. I didn't have scallions, so I left those out. It smelled pretty sweet while it was cooking, and we thought it was going to be too sweet, but then you get the spice from the 5 spice powder, and it turned out to be an awesome balance of flavors. Be careful not to reduce the sauce too much, or the sugar will begin to caramelize itself to your pan! I served this fish over herbed quinoa and served some mixed veggies on the side. Thanks so much for posting this!

Big hit with granddaughters (5, 9) I've now made this twice and the 2nd time I added a teaspoon of ground ginger (from the market) to the soy sauce/sugar and 2 T water. I then undercooked the fish, added the mixture and raised temperature to high to reduce the broth to a glaze and finish cooking the fish. It was heavenly and will be made again and again.

I tried this for dinner last night and it didn't disappoint! My daughter who said "Mom, you know I don't like fish" even ate the whole piece! The five spice and sauce was very flavorful and the recipe was fast and easy! We will definitely have this again!

This was so easy to make and turned out so tasty. I will definitely make this again. Very flavorful recipe.

I cooked this on a Saturday night and had it on the table in 20 minutes with rice and broccolini. I read reviews and listened to the advice of others. I seasoned with the five spice liberally and used low sodium soy sauce. It was great. My S.O. enjoyed it as well, but probably not as much as me. I'm changing this to a weeknight rotation.

This was good but I felt the sauce overpowered the fish completely. Tilapia has a delicate flavor better suited to a lighter sauce of butter and a touch of garlic, lemon, s & p. I have used a similar sauce (using honey not brown sugar) on salmon and tuna; it seemed better suited to these types of fillets. Great recipe for someone who doesn't like the taste of fish.

This is a very easy recipe to make and it is easy on the budget. I will recommend this to everyone because it is delicious, inexpensive, and easy!

I was so surprised by how flavorful this recipe is, and how easy and quick it is to prepare. The fish was a combo of sweet and savory. I'll definitely make this again.

This was extremely tasty. I loved it. I didn't have any five spice pwoder, so I concocted my own spice rub using cinnnamon, cloves, cumin and coriander. It was very tasty. I will purchase five spice for the next time I make this.

My family enjoyed this fish dish! It was a nice change from the regular fish recipes in my rotation. And I was happy to put the Five Spice powder in my pantry to good use! I seem to forget it's there sometimes, which is a shame because it's absolutely divine!
I doubled the recipe and used Splenda brown sugar blend (but only about 2.5 Tbsp) instead of the regular brown sugar. I left the scallion garnish off, too, as I'm not that fond of them. I wouldn't want to eat this every night, because of the sugar, but it's definitely good enough to make again.

Quick recipe to fix. I used too much Chinese 5 Spice, but it was still good. I will try it again with less of the spice or none of it at all. Thank You for sharing it.

Soooo easy and soooo good! I didn't have any 5-spice but I used allspice as someone else said they did along with some cinnamon and northwoods seasoning. I don't think this is anywhere near what the 5-spice tastes like, but it complimented the sauce really well. I made the recipe only for one, so I had a lot of room in the pan so I added some leftover steamed peas and carrots I had from last night, which went great with the sauce as well. I'll definitely make this next time I have tilapia on hand!

Even though I couldn't find Asian 5 spice (I only looked in 2 stores though) this recipe was awesome. I used Allspice instead as a last minute substitution (although I'm not sure they are even similar) but it still tasted awesome. The soy sauce/brown sugar mixture was great and we poured the extra on some vegetables we had stir fried. I can't wait to actually get the correct seasoning and try it again.

Great recipe! Easy and tasty. We have made it numerous times already and through in onions to saute at the end with the sauce. Love it. Five Stars for Five Spice Tilapia.

This was good but I think it could be a little sweeter so I am going to add a little more brown sugar next time. Oh, and I just loved the smell of the five-spice as the fish cooked.

This was SO good! The five-spice and the glaze complement each other really well. I made it for supper tonight with the roasted corn and shitake mushrooms, also from this issue. My husband has been talking about it all evening. Even my 4-year-old and 1-year-old aet it up. And it was incredibly quick and simple.
