Preparation

Step 1

Preheat oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C). Generously butter an 8x8-inch square baking dish. Prepare a water bath for the baking dish by placing a larger dish in the oven, and partially filling it with hot water.

Place bread cubes in the baking dish. In a medium bowl, beat together eggs, sugar, and vanilla. Slowly whisk in the scalded milk. Pour over the bread. Sprinkle with nutmeg, brown sugar, and pecans.

Place the baking dish in the water bath. Bake for 50 to 60 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the middle comes out clean. Serve either hot or chilled.

Fabulous recipe which has been enjoyed by everyone who tasted it. I used Challah bread instead of French bread (and a lot more than the recipe calls for). I also used quite a bit more brown sugar and pecans on the top, and made a bourbon sauce to finish it with. Delicious!

Great bread pudding!! I made a few slight changes...I used half cream & half milk, croissants instead of french bread and increased the amount of bread significantly. I didn't have nuts so I just topped with brown sugar, cinnamon & nutmeg. I also made the brown sugar sauce from this site and served the bread pudding with it. WONDERFUL!!

This bread pudding is great one of the best I've ever tasted. I made it on Christmas day this year and last, this will be one that I will make ever Christmas dinnner.

This was a really nice bread pudding. I brought it to my boyfriend's parents' house for Thanksgiving, and it was a hit (in a crowd that's usually not big on dessert!). To make it a little richer (for the holidays) I used 3 eggs and 2 egg yolks and also used cream for 1/3 of the milk.

This was fabulous. I did add cinnamon and it needed to bake for over an hour, but smothered with whipped cream, it's delicious!

We LOVED this recipe! I was out of bread and used THOMAS' cinnamon flavored waffles and it turned out fantastic! Thanks!

Great use of leftover bread! As a matter of fact, I'm eating the rest of it now. I added raisins and cinnamon to mine. Wonderful recipe made with ingredients found in the pantry.

Very good! Will try to add cinnamon next time and the bread can be varied. Would be delicious with Whiskey sauce or brown sugar sauce.

I've never really had bread pudding before, but my mom claims to be an expert, and she dubbed this "EXCELLENT!" I just heated up a cup of half and half and a cup of skim milk in the microwave as my "scalded" milk. I didn't use nuts because I was too lazy/exhausted from work/kids/etc. to chop them right now, but sprinkled a little snack pack of raisins on top. For the bread, I used a starting to go moldy bag of Amoroso rolls- I cut the moldy bits off, of course! Great recipe. Thanks!

Yes, this recipe is the Bomb! It was my first time making bread pudding and it was delicious :) Yum! I added a bit more white sugar and topped with caramel sauce after done cooking. I also added 1/2 cup more milk because I wanted it soft and gooey. But the original recipe was delicious too. Everyone kept saying it was too much sugar, but I thought it fine. I actually added more sugar the 2nd time because it wasn't sweet enough for me. But everyone's taste buds are different. The only thing I have to say is the nutmeg is very strong, so I would lightly sprinkle it. You can also substitute for cinnamon if you prefer. Still great!!

Excellent . . . easy. . .I added cinnamon to the spices and will keep this recipe!

I very much enjoyed this recipe! It is so simple and very tasty. And adding cinnamon sugar to the actual bread before you put the other stuff on like other users suggested makes it even better. Thanks for this recipe.

Great! I made homemade yeast rolls from this site for Thanksgiving, froze some, and ate a bunch...the recipe made 36 rolls, so I made this bread pudding out of the leftovers and it was really good! I did add a teaspoon of Watkins cinnamon, omitted the nuts (dad has no teeth), and scalding the milk is unecessary. Just heat the milk as it is already pasturized and temper it into the egg mixture! We really enjoyed it!

Great recipe! My kids loved it so much I made it two nights in a row, both times using a package of hamburger buns.

Simple and easy to follow. The water bath greatly improves the results. Following friend's suggestion I used italian pannetonne bread/cake and was thrilled with the results. Definitely will make again. Thanks!
