Grandma's Secret Trick:

If Grandma didn't have a package of chopped dates on hand, she had some tricks that made chopping whole dates much less of a sticky mess. She used a pair of kitchen scissors instead of a knife to snip the dates into small pieces, letting them fall right into the measuring cup as she snipped. But the real secret was what she did before snipping the dates: Grandma lightly coated the scissor blades with nonstick cooking spray.
