Preparation

Step 1

Place rack in center of oven and preheat oven to 350 degrees. Set aside an ungreased 13x9-inch metal pan.

For crust, place the cake mix, peanut butter, butter, and eggs in a large mixing bowl. Blend with electric mixer on low speed for 1 minute. Stop machine and scrape down sides of bowl with rubber spatula. Batter will be thick. Reserve 1½ cups crust mixture for topping. Turn remaining batter into pan and spread it evenly with your fingertips so that it reaches slightly up sides of pan. Set pan aside.

For filling, place chocolate chips and condensed milk in large microwave-safe bowl in microwave oven on high power for 1 minute. Remove bowl and stir until chocolate chips melt. Stir in vanilla. Pour chocolate mixture over reserved crust, and spread so that it reaches edges of pan. With your fingertips, crumble reserved crust mixture over top of filling. Place pan in oven.

Bake bars until they are golden brown, 30 to 35 minutes. Remove pan from oven and cool 30 minutes. Cut into 24 to 30 bars and serve.

Note: If you are using 16.5 to 18.25-ounce cake mix, reduce butter to 8 tablespoons (1 stick) and peanut butter to 1 cup.
