Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pound Granny Smith apples, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 package (11-ounce) butterscotch flavored chips
  • 1/4 cup plus 3 tablespoons firmly packed light brown sugar, divided
  • 1/4 cup plus 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour, divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons (1/4 stick) butter
  • 1/2 cup walnuts, chopped
  • 1/2 cup quick-cooking or rolled oats
  • Vanilla ice cream (optional)

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat oven to 375°F. Arrange the apples in an ungreased 9-inch square baking dish.


Combine the butterscotch-flavored chips, 3 tbsp. brown sugar, 3 tbsp. flour and the cinnamon in a small bowl. Mix well. Sprinkle the butterscotch-flavored chip mixture evenly over the apples. Bake for 15 minutes. Remove from oven.


Meanwhile, combine the remaining flour and brown sugar in a medium bowl. Cut in the butter with 2 forks or a pastry blender until coarse crumbs form. Stir in the walnuts and oats.


Sprinkle the flour mixture evenly over the apples. Bake until the apples are tender and the topping is lightly browned, 20–30 minutes. Cool slightly. Serve with ice cream, if desired.
