  • 1 1/2 pounds small new red potatoes, scrubbed
  • 5 1/3 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons chopped fresh dill

Preparation

Step 1

Combine potatoes with enough water to cover in a large saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Cook until tender, about 12 minutes; drain. Let stand to cool. Cut potatoes in half.


Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Stir in brown sugar and salt. Cook mixture, stirring continually, until thickened, about 5 minutes. Reduce the heat to low.


Add potatoes to skillet and stir to coat thoroughly with brown sugar mixture.


Spoon potatoes into a serving bowl. Sprinkle with dill. Serve immediately.

Grandma's Secret Tips!

Grandma felt that potatoes had a better flavor and texture when cooked with salt, in addition to being salted afterward. She usually added 1 teaspoon of salt to the water used to boil the potatoes. Most of the salt was drained off with the water. She continued with the recipe as written, using the salt in the brown sugar mixture as well.
