Ingredients

  • 5 to 6 lb chuck roast, most of the fat trimmed
  • 6 large potatoes, peeled and cut in half
  • 4 or 5 large carrots, cleaned and cut across two or three times
  • 3 pieces of turnip (optional)
  • 5 or 6 onions ( 1 large, the rest regular size)
  • couple of sweet potatoes, peeled and cut up
  • 2 or 3 stalks of celery, cut in to one inch pieces
  • 2 or 3 shakes garlic powder
  • 2 or 3 shakes salt and pepper
  • 2 or 3 shakes meat tenderizer
  • 1 1/2 Tbs ketchup mixed in one cup warm water
  • 1 1/4 Tbs brandy flavoring
  • 2 large tomatoes, sliced and put on top of meat
  • 1 or more scoops of flour
  • 1/4 tsp each of thyme, cloves and celery seed
  • 2 bay leaves

Preparation

Step 1

Grease a large roasting pan and place meat in center of pan. Place vegetables all around meat until full, then sprinkle spices and flour over meat. Cover with water and bake at 400 degrees. When meat gets brown, turn meat and vegetables over and let cook until brown (for well done). You can add fresh mushrooms too, if desired.
