  • 4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1-1/2 cups buttermilk
  • 1/3 cup maple syrup
  • 4 ounce walnuts

Step 1

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. In large bowl, mix 4 cups all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon baking powder, 1 tablespoon sugar, 1-1/2 teaspoons salt, and 1/2 teaspoon baking soda.

With pastry blender cut in 1/2 cup shortening, until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in 1-1/2 cups buttermilk, 1/3 cup maple syrup and one 4 ounce can walnuts, chopped. quickly mix just until mixture forms soft dough that leaves side of bowl. Turn dough onto lightly floured surface, knead 6-8 strokes to mix thoroughly.

With floured rolling pin, roll out dough into 12" x 8" rectangle. With floured knife, cut dough into 2" squares, place on ungreased cookie sheet, about 1" apart. Brush biscuits with 1 tablespoon maple syrup. Bake 10-12 minutes until golden.
