Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup solid vegetable shortening
  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 4 cups sifted confectioners sugar (approximately 1 pouund)
  • 2 tablespoons milk

Preparation

Step 1

Cream butter and shortening with electric mixer.

Add vanilla

Gradually add sugar, one cup at a time, beating well on medium speed.

Scrape sides and bottom of bowl often.

When all sugar has been mixed in, icing will appear dry.

Add milk and beat at high speed until light and fluffy.

Keep covered with damp cloth until ready to use.

Refrigerate when not in use.

Keeps for up to 2 weeks in airtight container.

Rewhip before using.

VARIATIONS:

For pure white icing and stiffer consistency, omit butter and add 1/2 cup all-vegetable shortening and 1/2 Wilton butter extract.

Use Wilton Clear Vanilla Extract.

To thin icing, add 2 tablespoons more milk or corn syrup per recipe.

To stiffen, chill icing or add more confectioners sugar.

For chocolate icing, add 3/4 cup unsweetened chocolate squares plus 2 tablespoons milk per recipe.

Mix well.
