Runza Casserole
By Addie
I live in Nebraska. The home of the Runza. For those of you who have never had a Runza...you are missing out. This is a great recipe for a Bierock (runza) casserole. I got the recipe from a friend.
MY NOTES: Cut this recipe in half for Jack and me!

Details
Preparation
Step 1
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Spread one tube of crescent rolls into the bottom of a 9x13x2 pan and bake 7 minutes or until brown.
While that is in the oven, brown the hamburger and onion in a skillet.
Drain the grease from the hamburger and add the cabbage. Let it steam for a few minutes. Add the salt and pepper.
Spread the hamburger/cabbage mix into the pan on top of the baked crescent dough. Sprinkle the cheese on top of the meat mixture.
Spread the 2nd tube of crescent rolls over the top of the cheese.
Bake for 35-40 minutes, covering with foil the last 10 minutes to soften the crust.
NOTE: Many recipes for this include a can of cream of mushroom soup mixed in with the meat and cabbage.

Funny this is called a runza I live in nebraska thats the only place I have heard them called that. Good stuff
We grew up in a German community, these were made and known as cabbage pockets, made individually. Had never heard the name Runza used before.
Runza is a fast food franchise in Nebraska that made cabbage pockets the star of their menu. They serve em with crinkle cut fries or homemade onion rings. However, the best Runzas are the ones available in memorial stadium on Husker game day.
Runzas are the midwests greatest secret!! Try making the hamburger, onion, cabbage mixture and using frozen roll dough to make individual ones. I also like using American cheese and you can also do Swiss cheese W/ mushroom.
This is the best and easiest recipe for runzas!
I don't use that much hamburger and I added a can of chicken soup to the burger, plus red pepper (sparingly) and I think any kind of cheese would work.
I lived in Lincoln, NE for about 5 years and always loved Runzas. Now, living in CA, I remembered a friend making a Runza casserole and found this recipe. My boyfriend had never had a Runza and kept asking, a WHAT? He loved it, as did I. The only thing I added was about 1/4-1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese that I had on hand and needed to use up. This was too much for just the 2 of us, and next time, I'll halve the recipe. Thank you for a great recipe!
I originally got this recipe from my mother-in-law, but have since lost the recipe. was very excited to see that a few people actually posted this recipe and can't wait to make it again! the only thing my mother-in-law's recipe adds is a little worcestershire.
We love this casserole. I didn't have mozarella on hand so I used mild cheddar. Interesting, we both thought it tasted kind of like White Castle cheeseburgers only not greasy. It was easy and very good - leftovers heated up well.
Great recipe. It was easy to make in our small apartment kitchen.
