Baked French Toast

Ingredients
- 1 cup half-and-half or whole milk
- 4 large eggs
- 2 Tbsp firmly packed light brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp freshly grated nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 12 slices sweet French bread, other white bread, or egg bread
- 2 Tbsp unsalted butter, melted
- Maple syrup for serving

Preparation
Step 1
Preheat the oven to 400F. Lightly butter a nonstick rimmed baking sheet.
In a bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, eggs, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. One slice at a time, turn the bread in the egg mixture to coat on both sides, soaking each slice for about 30 seconds. Shake off excess batter and transfer the soaked bread to the prepared baking sheet.
Bake until the tops are golden, 5-7 minutes. Flip each slice and continue to bake until puffed and golden on the second side, 5-7 minutes longer.
Turn the oven to the broiler setting. Brush the tops of the baked toasts with the melted butter. Place under the broiler until lightly browned, about 1 minute. Serve at once with warmed maple syrup.
