Sure Thing Sugar Cookies

This is the recipe my mom used when I was growing up, we would bake a bunch of heart shaped cookies on Valentine's Day, make plates for our neighbors, and do the RING and RUN delivery. Those were some great memories, I still even have a couple of the Charlie Brown cookie cutters we used.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup shortening
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp almond, lemon, or vanilla extract

Preparation

Step 1

Cut shortening into flour, using a pastry blender or fork until the mixture is the consistency of corn meal or small peas.

Combine remaining ingredients; mix with with flour/shortening mixture.

Roll dough to 1/8-inch thickness. Cut into various shapes with cookie cutters. Bake on a baking sheet at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes or until lightly browned on edges. Decorate or frost as desired.
