Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup milk 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 1 cup water, boiling

Preparation

Step 1

1• Heat brown sugar and water in a small saucepan to boiling. Stir well and set the syrup aside.


2• Cream shortening, egg and sugar until smooth


3• Sift flour, and baking powder together. Add to batter, alternating with milk. (Begin and end with dry).


4• Add vanilla


5• Pour batter into greased 8X8 or 9X9 pan, preferably glass.


6• Slowly pour the syrup over the batter.


7• Bake at 350 for 45-50 minutes (325 for glass)
