Ingredients

  • 1 pound dry ziti pasta
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 (26 oz) jar spaghetti sauce with mushrooms
  • 6 ounces provolone cheese, sliced
  • 2 cans (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 1/2 Tbsp dried basil
  • 1/2 Tbsp dried oregano
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 6 ounces Mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 2 Tbsps grated Parmesan cheese

Preparation

Step 1

Cook the ziti to just al dente, about 8 minutes. Coat a 9 x 13 inch baking dish with butter.

In a large skillet, brown onion and ground beef over medium heat. Add spaghetti sauce, tomatoes and spices and simmer 15 minutes.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Layer as follows: ½ of the ziti, Provolone cheese, ½ sauce mixture, remaining ziti, mozzarella cheese and remaining sauce mixture. Top with Parmesan cheese.

Bake for 30 minutes or until cheeses are melted.
