Ingredients

  • Pie Filling:
  • Unbaked 9-inch pie shell
  • ...............................................
  • 3 lbs of apples (ex: Granny Smith, Golden, Jonathan, McIntosh, Honeycrisp,)
  • You want apples that will hold their shape won’t mush up. NO RED DELICIOUS
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 2 T. fresh lemon juice
  • 6 T. unsalted butter
  • 1 T. all purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • Pinch ground cloves
  • Pinch of nutmeg
  • ................................................
  • Dutch topping:
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 6 T. melted butter
  • 1/4 cup oats
  • Mix all together until crumble sprinkle evenly over top of pie before baking.

Preparation

Step 1

1. Peel, core and slice apples. Toss with sugar and lemon juice in large bowl.

2. Melt 4 T. butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the apples mixture and cook stirring occasionally until the firmer apples soften but hold their shape (about 10 min.). Sprinkle with the flour, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg and toss until the juice starts to thicken. Remove from heat and cool completely. Pour into unbaked pie crust. After putting the apple mixture in the crust dot with remaining 2 Tbs of butter.

3. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Place pie on baking sheet (to avoid over spills and a messy oven) Bake until crust is golden and filling is bubbly. 55-60 minutes. Transfer to wire rack and cool for 2 hours.
