Onion rings are great, and french fries are delicious, but together they are amazing. This recipe combines the fried taste of onion rings with the shape of shoestring fries.

Ingredients

  • 2 large onions
  • 3 cup buttermilk
  • 3 cup flour
  • 1 1/2 tablespoon salt
  • lots of black pepper
  • coconut oil for frying

Step 1

Begin by slicing the onions very thin. Use a mandoline to ensure that each slice is exactly the same thickness.

Place onions in a baking dish and cover with buttermilk for at least one hour.

Combine flour, salt, and pepper in a large bowl and set aside.

Heat oil to 375 degrees.

When the oil is hot, grab a handful of onions, throw into the flour mixture, tap to shake off excess, and plunge into hot oil. Fry for a few minutes and remove as soon as golden brown. Place on paper towels to remove some of the excess oil. Repeat until all of the onions are fried.
