This is the first recipe I taught to Rian and Devon - Rian was probably 6 and Devon 3.

Ingredients

  • Meatloaf:
  • 2/3 c. dry bread crumbs (I don't use these, but have included in the recipe.)
  • 1 c. milk (because I don't use the bread crumbs, I cut down on this a bit)
  • 1 1/2 lb. ground beef
  • 2 lightly beaten eggs
  • 1/4 c. grated onion (or finely chopped) (or 1 package Lipton onion soup, which is what Mom
  • used to use)
  • 1/4 tsp. salt (or to taste)
  • 1/8 tsp. pepper (I use more)
  • 1/2 tsp. sage (ditto - but I really don't measure any more - just eyeball it)
  • Topping (double this, as it is the BEST part of the meatloaf)
  • 1/4 c. catsup
  • 3 Tbsp. brown sugar
  • 1 tsp. dry mustard
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg (my addition)

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat oven to 350. Soak bread crumbs in milk. Add all other ingredients for meatloaf and put in loaf pan(s). Bake 1 hour at 350 (put topping on for last 15 minutes of baking). Should be browned on top before you put topping on.

Topping. Mix all ingredients well.
