  • 1/2 c unbleached all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 c unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 3 egg whites
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 c granulated sugar
  • 1/2 c packed brown sugar
  • 2/3 c unsweetened applesauce
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 c coarsely chopped walnuts
  • Confectioners' sugar

Step 1

1. PREHEAT the oven to 350°F. Grease a 13" x 9" baking pan.
2. COMBINE the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl.
3. BEAT the egg whites until foamy in a large bowl with an electric mixer on low speed. Gently stir in the eggs, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until well-combined. Blend in the applesauce and vanilla extract. Stir in the flour mixture. Stir in the walnuts.
4. SPREAD into the prepared pan. Bake for 30 minutes, or until a wooden pick inserted in the center comes out clean. Do not over bake. Cool in the pan on a rack. Dust the confectioners' sugar over the brownies.
