Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 3/4 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup sugar
- 3/4 cup shortening
- 1/4 cup molasses
- 1 egg
- Sugar

Step 1
1. In a bowl, combine flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, cloves and salt.
2. In a mixing bowl, beat together the 1 cup sugar, shortening, molasses and egg till fluffy.
3. Add the dry ingredients and beat till combined; 'if necessary, stir in last portion of flour by hand. .
4. Shape dough into l-inch balls. Roll balls in additional sugar. Place the sugar-coated balls 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets.
5. Bake in a 350° oven for 10 to 12 minutes or till done (edges are dry). Let the baked cookies cool several minutes on cookie sheet before removing to wire rack. Makes 36 cookies
