  • 1-1/2 pounds fresh whole okra
  • 1 cups self rising cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • vegetable oil

Step 1

Recipe Instructions:
1.Preheat deep fryer with vegetable oil to 375F. If you don't have a deep fryer just heat cooking oil in a skillet over medium high heat. If using a skillet be sure to use enough oil to cover the okra.
2.Wash okra under running cold water and drain well. Next prepare okra for cooking by cutting the tip and stem ends off your okra. Cut the remaining okra into 1/2 inch slices. Set cut okra aside while you prepare cornmeal coating.
3.Next combine dry ingredients consisting of cornmeal, flour, salt and black pepper in brown paper bag or plastic bag. Shake mixture well.
4.Drop cut and drained okra in bag and shake well for a uniform coat. Drop okra in deep fryer and fry okra in hot vegetable oil until golden brown. Do not overcrowd fryer with okra. Okra will float to top when ready to be removed.
5.If using a skillet once okra begins to brown on one side turn over to the other side and brown.
6.Once okra is done, remove from oil and allow to drain on paper towels.
