Ingredients

  • Cake:
  • 1 C buttermilk
  • 1/2 C raisins (soak in buttermilk)
  • 1 C sugar
  • 1/2 C brown sugar
  • 1/2 C shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 1/2 C flour
  • 1 t. salt
  • 1 t. cinnamon
  • 1/4 t. cloves
  • 1/4 t. nutmeg
  • 2 t. soda
  • 2 C. grated raw apple
  • Topping:
  • 1/4 C butter
  • 1/2 C brown sugar
  • 3 T. cream
  • 1 T corn syrup

Preparation

Step 1

1. Cream sugar and shortening; add eggs and spices.
2. Drain raisins from buttermilk and add buttermilk alternately with flour, soda, salt mixture.
3. Add raisins and apples.
4. Pour into 9 X 13 pan and bake at 350 degrees.
5. Bring all topping ingredients to a boil and add nuts if desired. Spread over warm cake and broil til bubbly and light brown.
