Ingredients
- 2 C. milk
- 2 C. cream
- 1/2 vanilla bean
- 1 piece of lemon peel
- 6 egg yolks
- 3 whole eggs
- 1/2 C. sugar
- 4-6 French bread slices
- Unsalted butter
- Slivered almonds

Preparation
Step 1
1. Preheat oven to 325°F. Bring water to boil for later use.
2. Combine milk and cream, 1/2 vanilla bean and 1 piece of lemon peel in a saucepan. Bring to just under a boil and let cool.
3. Beat egg yolks and eggs with sugar. Remove vanilla bean and lemon peel from milk; combine with eggs. Pour into a 2 qt. baking dish. Trim and butter French bread slices. Float them on top of the custard, buttered side up so they just cover the surface. Sprinkle with slivered almonds.
4. Place the dish in a baking pan; add boiling water to 3/4 the way up the side of the dish. Bake for 40-50 minutes until a knife inserted in the custard comes out clean. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
