When I was a military wife and the men went away on exercise, the women would get together and cook. We would have a week making cookies and choosing the best ones. My cookie recipes are the result of tried and true recipes, judged the best by the children we make them for.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup shortening
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1 egg
  • 1 3/4 cups flour
  • 2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. ginger
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • sugar to roll

Step 1

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Blend together the shortening, sugar, molasses and egg.

In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon and salt.

Mix the dry ingredients into the wet. Roll into balls, and roll in a plateful of sugar.

Place balls on a baking sheet, flatten with a fork and bake for 10 minutes in a 350 degree oven.
