Mint Julep

The Mint Julep is a traditional Southern drink. At the restaurant we even have our own engraved julep cups. We wouldn't serve anything else at a Kentucky Derby Party held the first Saturday in May.

Ingredients
- For Simple Syrup:
- 20 leaves fresh mint
- 2 tablespoons Simple Syrup (see below)
- 2 tablespoons hot water
- Crushed ice
- 1/4 cup bourbon
- Splash of lemon-lime soda
- 1 sprig fresh mint for garnish
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup sugar

Step 1
Make the Simple Syrup:
Bring water and sugar to a simmer in a small saucepan over medium heat, about 1 to 2 minutes, or until sugar is dissolved. Chill and store in covered container in refrigerator to use as needed.
Place mint leaves, Simple Syrup, and water in a 14 ounce mixing glass and muddle or mash to crush the leaves.
Fill silver tumbler with crushed ice. Strain mint mixture into tumbler and pour in bourbon and soda.
Stir drink until tumbler is frosty and garnish with mint sprig.
