Ingredients

  • Equipment:
  • 1 12–16 pound watermelon
  • 4 cups boiling water
  • 4 3-ounce boxes red Jell-O mix
  • 2 1-ounce boxes unflavored gelatin
  • 4 cups vodka (optional)
  • 2 large bowls (one to mix the Jell-O, and one for the watermelon meat you scoop out)
  • Melon-baller
  • Long skewers (for melon balls that you have scooped out)
  • A pot (to boil the water)
  • Whisk
  • Large cookie sheet pan. Place one paper towel in the middle, then fold two other sheets and place them on either side so the watermelon will sit in the middle.

Preparation

Step 1

Scoop out watermelon and preserve the melon balls.

Skewer balls

Combine the jello mixes and the unflavored gelatin in one bowl.

Boil water

In a large mixing bowl, combine the Jell-O mix and the unflavored gelatin. Add 4 cups of boiling water and whisk until the gelatin is completely dissolved, about 2 minutes. Add the vodka or 4 more cups of cold water all at once and whisk just to combine.

Pour the mixture into the watermelon halves, splitting between the two.

Carefully place the Jell-O filled watermelon bowls in the fridge, and refrigerate until set, about 4 hours.

When Jell-O is set, cut each half into 1-inch slices, crosswise, then cut each slice into 2–3 wedges, and serve.

Makes about 30 wedge shots.
