Ingredients
- 4 C. unsifted all-purpose flour
- 4 tsp. baking powder
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 2/3 C. vegetable shortening
- 1 1/3 C. buttermilk

Preparation
Step 1
1. Heat oven to 425°F. In large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, salt, and baking soda. Cut in shortening with pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
2. Add buttermilk, and mix lightly with fork until mixture clings together and forms a soft dough.
3. Turn dough out onto lightly floured surface and knead gently 5 or 6 times. Roll out to l-inch thickness and cut with 3-inch biscuit cutter. Lightly press trimmings together, and reroll to cut out more biscuits. Place, 1 inch apart, on ungreased baking sheet. Prick tops with tines of fork.
4. Bake biscuits 10 to 12 minutes or until light brown. Serve warm.
