Ingredients

  • 2 cups shredded wheat cereal
  • 1/12 cup walnuts chopped fine
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/2 c sweet butter melted
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 TBSP lemon juice

Preparation

Step 1

1 Butter a 9 x 9 x 2-inch pan.
2 Layer 1 c of the shredded wheat on the bottom of the pan. Cover with walnuts.
3 Layer on the remaining shredded wheat. Pour the melted butter over it all.
4 Bake at 350° until light brown (about 20 to 25 minutes).
5 Cook the ingredients for syrup over medium heat until sugar melts. Simmer uncovered for 10 minutes.
6 Pour syrup over hot browned mixture. Cover and allow to cool.
7 Cut into squares.
8 May be served with whipped cream on top.

Make syrup by combining sugar, water and lemon juice in saucepan. Cook for 20 minutes making sure sugar is completely dissolved. Allow to cool before pouring over kataife. Cool before serving.
