Ingredients

  • Date mixture:
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 3 eggs, well beaten
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 1/4 cups chopped dates
  • 1 cup nuts
  • 1 cup water

Preparation

Step 1

Cook the sugar, dates and water 10 minutes or until thick. Add nuts and set aside to cool.

Cream the shortening and sugar, add the eggs, and mix well. Add the dry ingredients. Divide the mixture in half. Roll each half to about 1/4 inch thickness. Spread with date mixture, then roll into 2 long rolls. Cool overnight or in the freezer. Slice and bake for 12 mintues at 350 degrees F.

Tip. I roll the dough on wax paper and use the paper to roll the dough into long rolls.
