Ingredients

  • 4 small Cortland apples
  • juice of 1 lemon
  • 4 Tbsp. packed brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/8 tsp ground allspice
  • 3 Tbsp unsweetened apple juice
  • 4 3in cinnamon sticks

Preparation

Step 1

1) Preheat oven to 450
2) remove apple cores with melon baller w/o cutting all the way through. Peel apples, brush with lemon juice. Cut a thin slice off the bottom so they stand upright. cut each apple crosswise into 1/2 inch slices. Reassemble slices in pie plate
3) Mix 2 Tbsp of brown sugar, the butter, and allspice in small bowl. Mix remaining Tbsp brown sugar and apple juice in another small bowl. Fill cavities of apples evenly with butter mix, then pour juice mix on top. Bake about 25 minutes, basting the apples with juices 3 times during baking time
4) Reduce oven temp to 350. Place cinnamon in apples. Bake, basting 3 more times until apples are tender and juices are syrupy, about 20 minutes.
