Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup Hellmann's Light Mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup dairy sour cream
  • 1/4 tsp caraway seeds, crushed
  • 1/8 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1/2 of an 8-ounce can sauerkraut, drained (1/2 cup)
  • 12 1/2 -inch-thick slices country-style rye, sourdough and/or white bread
  • 18 1-ounce slices cheddar, American, Colby and Monterey Jack, Swiss and/or provolone cheese
  • 6 slices thinly sliced, cooked ham
  • 3-4 tbsp butter, melted
  • Pickles (optional)

Preparation

Step 1

1. In a small bowl, mix Hellmann's Light Mayonnaise, sour cream, caraway seeds and black pepper, stir in sauerkraut, set aside.

2. Place 6 slices of bread on a large foil-lined baking sheet; top each bread slice with a slice of the cheese. Top cheese on bread with sauerkraut mixture. Top sauerkraut mixture with ham and remaining 12 slices of cheese. Using a pastry brush, brush remaining 6 slices of bread with some of the melted butter. Place brad slices, buttered sides up, atop cheese to make 6 sandwiches.

3. Turn sandwiches over and brush bread tops with remaining butter.

4. Bake sandwiches in a 350 oven about 10 minutes or until cheese is melted and bread is lightly browned, turning once. To serve, cut the cheese sandwiches from corner to corner and serve with pickles, if you like.
