Ingredients

  • 12 oz pkg. split peas
  • 1 fully cooked ham hock -trimmed of all visible fat
  • 1 whole onion - peeled
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 c cubed cabbage
  • 3/4 c sliced carrots
  • 1/2 c cubed turnip
  • 1/2 c diced onion
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Preparation

Step 1

Pace peas, ham hock, whole onion, and bay leaf in large heavy pot with 7 cups water.
Bring to a boil over high heat, skimming off foam.
Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 2 hours until peas are soft.
Remove and discard ham hock, onion, and bay leaf.
Stir in remaining ingredients.
Bring to a boil.
Cove and simmer 30 minutes more until vegetables are tender.
If soup is very think, thin with a little water and re-season to taste.
You can add more vegetable if desired.
