Ingredients

  • Frosting:
  • 1 1/2 c sugar
  • 1/2 c butter, softened
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 tsp cocoa
  • 2 oz red food coloring (I generally just go by look…the redder, the better :) )
  • 2 1/2 c flour
  • 1 c buttermilk
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp soda
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 1 c sugar
  • 1 c butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Preparation

Step 1

Cream butter and sugar well. Add eggs. In small dish, make a paste of the cocoa and some of the red food coloring. Add cocoa/red food coloring mixture to the sugar/butter mixture. Add in the remaining red food coloring. Add vanilla. Put salt into buttermilk and add alternately with flour. Combine vinegar and soda over the batter, letting it bubble and spill into batter and fold together. Pour into 2 9 inch cake pans, or make into cupcakes.Bake at 350 degrees for 18-23 minutes (or until cake is done with toothpick test).

Frosting: cook together 1 c milk and 3 Tbsp. flour until thick. Cool. Using mixer, beat together sugar and butter til very light and fluffy. Add cooled floured mixture to fluffy butter mixture, add vanilla and beat well.*
