Ingredients

  • 2 cups warm water or potato water
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 cakes compressed yeast
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 6 1/2 to 7 cups flour

Step 1

Mix together warm water sugar salt. Crumble yeast into water and stir until dissolved> Add egg and shortening. Mix in flour.

Mix in first with spoon and then with hands, but do not knead, just mix well. Can be kept several days in refrigerator. Keep covered with damp cloth and punch dough down every couple of days. Pinch off amount to be used, roll out to about 1/2 inch thick. Cut with glass. Pull oval shaped and dip in melted butter or margarine. Fold over and place on greased pan. Let rise 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Bake at 375 12-15 minutes.
