Ingredients

  • 2 cups dried split peas
  • Ham with bone and extra ham cut in cubes
  • 3 quarts cold water
  • 3 large carrots chopped
  • 3 stalks celery chopped
  • 1 large onion chopped
  • 1 potato shredded (may use more)
  • fresh pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon thyme
  • Bay leaf

Preparation

Step 1

Place everything in large pot. Cover and bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer 4-5 hours, stirring frequently. If too thick, thin with water or another shredded potato. Serve with some kind of cheese grated on top: Swiss parmesan etc.
