Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup plus 1 Tbsp margarine
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 2 packages dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (a little warmer than lukewarm)
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 3 teaspoons salt
  • 5 cups whole wheat flour (approximate), divided
  • 3-4 cups white flour (approximate)

Preparation

Step 1

Heat milk, margarine, and brown sugar until margarine dissolves. Set aside to cool. Dissolve yeast and granulated sugar in the water. When milk mixture is cool, combine with the yeast-sugar mixture. Add the salt and about 2 cups of the whole wheat flour. Then add the remaining whole wheat flour and about 3 cups white flour (adding additional flour, if needed), kneading for about 10 minutes until the dough is smooth. Place in a greased bowl to raise until doubled in bulk. Punch down, shape in loaves and raise in greased pans until doubled in bulk. Bake at 375 degrees and continue baking about 25 minutes longer, or until done. Remove from pan immediately and cool on racks.
