Ingredients

  • 1 large egg
  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup butter flavor shortening
  • 1 T milk
  • 1 1/2 t baking powder
  • 1 t vanilla
  • 1/4 t salt
  • Decorator's Icing
  • 2 1/2 cups 4X sugar
  • 1/4 t cream of tartar
  • 2 large egg whites

Preparation

Step 1

In bowl, with mixer on low, mix first 8 ingredients
Shape into ball (mixture will be crumbly at first), refrigerate 2 hours
Preheat oven to 350 degrees
On a floured surface,roll half of dough at a time 1/8 inch thick
With 5" and/or 3 inch oval cookie cutter,cut out cookies
Bake cookies on an untreated cookie sheet 10-12 minutes or until golden brown
While still hot, cut hole in one end for ribbon
Remove cookies to a rack to cool
Prepare icing
Spread soft icing on to cookies, use decorating bag and tubes to pipe on stiff icing
If icing becomes too thick, add a few drops of lemon juice
When icing is set, tie bow
Makes twelve large or 36 small cookies
Each large cookie is about 340 calories

Decorator's Icing
In bowl, with mixer on low, beat sugar, cream of tartar and egg whites until slightly thickened
To spread icing, stop beating now
To pipe, continue beating until very stiff
Divide icing among as many food colorings
Keep bowls covered with plastic wrap to prevent drying out
