Ingredients

  • Filling:
  • 1 package dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup scalded milk
  • 2 Tbs sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup butter, at room temperature
  • 1 egg slightly beaten
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 Tbs butter
  • 1/2-1 cup Strawberry preserves
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup raisins
  • 1/2-3/4 cup chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans)

Step 1

Put package of dry yeast in a bowl with 1/4 tsp sugar. Add 1/4 cup warm water (110-115). Let stand for 8-10 minutes to let yeast work.

Measure flour in mixing bowl, add salt and butter, mix in mixer with dough hook until it resembles coarse meal.

To the flour and butter mixture add the cooled scalded milk, the slightly eaten egg, the yeast and vanilla. (I usually cut down a little on the milk and the water to get close to the 1/2 cup milk.)

Beat until mixture goes together, use a spatula to push it together, use your hand to feel if it is to sticky or to dry. Add a little flour or water accordingly. Take out of owl and knead it genbtly on counter or a cloth and it is a nice ball. Place in a greased bowl, cover and place in refrigerator to rest about 1-1/2 hours or till uou get back to it.

Roll out to about 10-15" rectangle. Spread butter and filling ingredients down center, leaving about 1 inch from edge. Lap it over and get one edge under the other. Cut a few little slits in top. Let it set till double in size (cover with towel).

Bake at 375 oven for 20-30 minutes.

Mix powder sugar and water and drizzle over cake when cool.
