Ingredients

    shortening

  • c sugar

  • 2

    eggs

  • ¼

    c (2 oz) rd food color

  • 1

    t vanilla

  • 2

    T cocoa

  • 1

    t salt

  • 1

    c buttermilk

  • c flour

  • 1

    T vinegar

  • 1

    t baking soda

  • Frosting:

  • 5

    T flour

  • 1

    c milk

  • ½

    lb butter

  • 1

    c conf sugar

  • 1

    t vanilla

Directions

Cream shortening and sugar til fluffy. Add eggs and beat. Make a paste with food color and cocoa, add to cake batter. Next, add vanilla and stir, then salt, alternately mix in flour and buttermilk to keep smooth. Grease and flour two 9 in cake pans. Quickly mix soda and vinegar in sm cup, add to batter just blending it thru. Pour batter evenly into pans, bake 350, 25-30 min, use toothpick test. Cool. Ice with frosting. Frosting: in saucepan combine milk and slowly sift flour and carefully cook over med heat until thick, whisking. Remove and let cool. With mixer beat butter, conf sugar and vanilla til like whipped cream. Add cooled mix. Let cool before frosting.
