Ingredients

  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup lukewarm water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 3-1/2 cups lukewarm water
  • 8 cups flour

Preparation

Step 1

Dissolve yeast in ¼ cup water. Set aside. Mix sugar, 3 cups flour, salt and shortening like pie crust. Then add 3-1/2 cups water and the softened yeast.

Add about 8 more cups of flour gradually.

Beat well after each addition to form a dough. Cover.

Let rise in a warm place until light and doubled in size, about 1-1/2 to 2 hours. Form dough into balls half the size desired. Pleace 2-1/2 to 3 inches apart on lightly greased cookie sheets or cake pans. Cover and let rise in warm place until light and double in size.

Bake at 375 degree oven for 12 to 15 minutes.

Makes 55 to 60 buns.
