Preparation

Step 1

Dissolve sugar and yeast n 1/4 cup lukewarm water. Let stand until it foams.
Beat egg yolks slightly with 1/2 tsp. water.
Blend butter, Crisco, and salt. Mix in flour as for a pie crust.
Blend beaten egg yolks and yeast mixture.
Add the liquid mixture to the flour mixture. Mix again like you would a pie crust.
Keep dough in a bowl as a ball of dough. (If dough is still stiff, add a few drops of milk.)

Filling:
Mix stiffly beaten egg whites and 3/4 pound ground walnuts. Mix in 1 cup of sugar (mix well). Divide dough in three parts. Roll one part on a sugar-sprinkled board. Roll thin, but don't break.
Spread nut mixture like butter and spread. Option 1: Roll like a jelly roll and cut in 1 inch pieces. Option 2: Cut covered dough in 4 x 4 inch squares and fold like a bow tie.
Place on ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake at 350 degrees until golden brown - about 8 minutes.
Remember to allow enough space to allow to rise while baking.
