Sarah's very favorite bar! I underbake a bit to make them chewy and gooey.

Ingredients

  • CRUST:
  • 1 cup shortening (NEVER USE BUTTER!!!)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cold water
  • 1/2 teaspoon soda
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 cups flour
  • MERINGE:
  • Beat egg whites until stiff.
  • Add 1 cup brown sugar and mix thoroughly.

Preparation

Step 1

Mix crust in order above.


Press into 9” x 13” pan.


Sprinkle with ½ package chocolate chips and 1 cups nuts (optional).


Beat meringe.


Spread meringue over chocolate chips and nuts.


Bake in 350 degree oven for 25 minutes.
