Ingredients

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 (3 oz.) pkg. cream cheese, softeded
  • 3 cups sugar
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup cocoa
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 (6 oz.) pkg. chocolate chips
  • powdered sugar

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Beat butter, shortening, cream cheese and sugar in bowl. Beat on high speed for 5 minutes. Add vanilla and eggs and beat well. In separate bowl, combine cocoa, flour, baking powder and 1/2 tsp. salt. Add half dry ingredients to batter, then buttermilk. End with remaining dry ingredients. Beat well after each addition. Fold in chocolate chips. Pour into sprayed, floured 10" tube pan. Bake for 1 hour 30 minutes. Cake is done when toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool cake in pan for 15 minutes then turn onto a cake plate and cool completely. Dust with powdered sugar. Serves 12- 16.

Buttermilk - Mix 1 cup milk with 1 tbsp lemon juice or vinegar and set stand for 10 minutes.
