Use when you make it. Refrigerate your cake when frosted. Because it is mostly butter, the frosting will harden as it cools. Take the cake out of the refrigerator about an hour before serving to allow frosting to soften.

  • 3 sticks of butter, softened
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa
  • 5 cups confectioner's sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla

Preparation

Step 1

Add cocoa to a large bowl and whisk to remove any lumps.
Cream together butter and cocoa powder.
Add sugar and milk by adding 1 cup of confectioner's sugar followed by a tablespoon of milk. After each addition has been combined, turn mixer onto high speed for about a minute. Repeat.
Add vanilla and combine well.
If it's too wet, add additional sugar a tablespoon at a time. If too dry, add a tablespoon of milk a tablespoon at a time.
