Ingredients

  • 1 package dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/2 cup and 1 teaspoon sugar, divided
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/3 stick margarine
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg, beaten, may omit
  • 4 cups flour

Step 1

Heat milk to scalding point. Remove from heat.

Put yeast, warm water and 1 teaspoon sugar in small bowl.

Add margarine to hot milk.

Mix sugar, salt, and egg. Pour margarine and hot milk over this mixture. Mix thoroughly.

Let cool to lukewarm before adding yeast mixture.

Mix all ingredients good.

Add 2 cups flour at a time, until a good firm soft dough forms. Mix well.

Take dough out and place on floured surface, knead until smooth. Place dough in a greased bowl to rise.

Let rise until double in size (about 1 1/2 hours).

Shape into a loaf or rolls. Let rise until double again.

Bake at 350° F. until brown.

Rolls take about 30 minutes, loaf takes 45 to 50 minutes.
