Ingredients

  • 2 cakes yeast
  • 1/2 cup lukewarm water
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 c. shortening
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 eggs (beaten)
  • 5 1/2 to 6 cups flour (regular not Wondra)

Preparation

Step 1

Soften yeast in warm water.

Scald milk. Add shortening, sugar, & salt. Cool.

Add 2 cups flour to make soft dough. Add yeast & eggs. Beat well. Add enough flour to make soft dough and it should stick to your hands. Knead & place in a greased bowl. Cover & let rise until double. Pinch down & make into loafs with a poppy seed filling.

** Poppyseed filling **

About 1 lb ground poppyseed
Sugar to taste - about 1 to 1 1/2 cups
1/4 lb butter
Milk - just enough to moisten the poppyseed

You warm this on the stove under low heat.
