Ingredients
- For cake:
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1 1/2 cups white sugar
- 2 eggs
- 2 tbsp cocoa
- 1/4 cup red food coloring
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 1/2 cups cake flour
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tbsp vinegar
- For icing:
- 5 tbsp flour
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup butter
- 1 cup icing sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla

Step 1
For cake:
Cream shortening. Add sugar gradually and cream until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time and beat after each addition. Make a paste of cocoa, food coloring and salt. Add to shortening mixture. Mix vanilla with buttermilk. Fold into buttermilk, 1 tsp baking soda dissolved in vinegar. Add flour and buttermilk alternately. Start and finish flour. Mix until smooth. Pour into3 well greased and floured 9" pans.
For icing:
Make paste of flour and part milk. Add remaining milk gradually. Mix until smooth. Cook over medium heat until thick. Cool well. Cream butter with icing sugar and vanilla. Mix until smooth. Add to cooled flour 1 tsp at a time. Beat until fluffy.
