  • 1 1/2 cups margarine or butter
  • 5 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 cups sugar
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour or 3 1/2 cups sifted cake flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla

  • 1/2 cup margarine or butter
  • 3 squares ( 3 ounces) unsweetened chocolate
  • 1 pound sifted powdered sugar( about 4 1/2 cups)
  • 1/2 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Preparation

Step 1

for cake;
let margarine, eggs and milk stand at room temperature 30 minutes. beat margarine in a large mixer bowl with an electric mixer on medium speed 30 seconds.

add sugar gradually, 2 tablespoons at a time. beat about 6 minutes or till light and fluffy. beat in eggs, one at a time, beating 1 minute after each addition

combine flour, cocoa powder, salt and baking powder. add to sugar mixture alternately with milk, beating well after each addition. beat in vanilla.

transfer mixture to a greased and floured 10-inch tube pan, spreading evenly. bake in a 325 oven, 1 hour and 25 minutes.

frosting;
melt margarine or butter and chocolate in a small saucepan, sete aside.

beat powdered sugar and evaporated milk in a large mixer bowl with an electric mixer till moistened. add chocolate mixture, beating till smooth. beat in vanilla. spread over cooled cake.
