Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. ginger
  • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp. cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • Easy Creamy Icing(See below)

Step 1

Mix shortening, sugar, egg, molasses, and water thoroughly. Measure flour by dipping method or by sifting. Stir dry ingredients together and blend in. Chill dough.

Heat oven to 400 degrees (mod. hot). Drop by teaspoonful about 2" apart on lightly greased baking sheet(Cookies will spread slightly during baking.) Bake about 8 min. or until almost no imprint remains when touched lightly. While slightly warm, frost with lemon- or vanilla-flavored icing.
Makes about 4 doz. cookies

Easy Creamy Icing:
1 cup sifted confectioners' sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. vanilla or other flavoring
1 1/2 tbsp. cream or 1 tbsp. water

Blend sugar, salt, and flavoring. Add cream to make easy to spread. If desired, tint with a few drops of food coloring. Spread on cooled cookies with spatula or pastry brush. Makes icing for 3 - 5 doz. cookies, depending on size.
